A lot of HTC devices have only a special micro USB port for charging cables and headphones. Special headphones are mandatorys. Regular headphones are only usable with a special adapter.

An additional disadvantage of the HTC USB adapter is the impossibility to attach an earphone and a charging cable at the same time. But there is a solution as well:

IMG 1702 300x225 Audio Adapter for HTC Micro USB

With this adapter it is possible to attach a charging cable and an eraphone at togehter – a little LED notifies if the device is charging.
IMG 1703 300x225 Audio Adapter for HTC Micro USB

Unfortunately it is not possible to use both adapters together as the bended adapter blocks the other port.

When attaching a normal USB cable instead of the charging one data exchange with a PC is possible.

In my opinion both cables must be shipped with a HTC device which uses such an USB port… but well….

Both adapters can be purchased via USB Fever:

Audio Jack to 3.5mm Plug Adapter for G1 / HTC (Right Angle): $4,99
HTC 2-in-1 USB Audio & Charger Adapter for HTC ExtUSB Smartphone: $8.99

If your Windows Mobile-phone is web-enabled, then this program is a must-have. Depending on your mobile-phone carrier and contract, browsing can be very expensive – all the more if you have no idea, how many data has been transferred.
An example: with my phone carrier, 1 MB costs 0,24€. Now if you’re a Youtube enthusiast and watch ~10 videos (one around 10 MB) in a week, you would have to pay 24€ only for internet!
Spb Wireless Monitor helps to keep your expenses low by counting the internet traffic and notifying when you reached a previous set limit. Let’s take a closer look:

 Spb Wireless Monitor Review

After starting up the program, you will see this screen with the most important functions. Open up the first function and you will see statistics about the internet usage. The program differentiates between the different types of internet connections: USB, WiFi, the data plan of your mobile carrier or other connections available. After choosing the type of connection, Spb Wireless Monitor displays which program used how much web traffic over this particular connection. These statistics can be displayed as a detailed list or as a diagram – a very clear way to present them.

pc capture2 225x300 Spb Wireless Monitor Review pc capture3 225x300 Spb Wireless Monitor Review

In addition, you can limit the time range of the data which should be displayed, for example the program can display only the transferred data volume of the last month. This is very useful, if you’ve a one-month volume flat. If you’ve previously entered the rate, Spb Wireless Monitor even shows how much you had to pay for your web trip.
Another nice feature are the notifications. The user can create as many notifications as he wishes. Spb Wireless Monitor can notify the user, if a determined volume or a determined cost-limit was reached. An example for a possible notification:

Notify me, if the daily volume exceeds 20 MB over the connection 3G Internet

 Spb Wireless Monitor Review

If this notification is active, the program displays a pop up message, if you used your mobile 3G internet connection and downloaded 20 MB of data, or watched some videos on Youtube which were 20 MB big in total, or if you just browsed web pages…

For those who like to have an overview over their expenses on the desktop computer, the export function might be a handy feature. The user can chose the connection, and the time range of the data which should be exported, then with a tap on the ‘Export’-button, the chosen data will be saved to a file. Supported output file formats are HTML and comma seperated values (CSV).

The last option in the main menu calls up the configuration dialog of the Spb Wireless Monitor today screen plugin. By default, data of all available connections are shown on the today screen. In this configuration dialog, the different connections can be hidden or shown.

Conclusion

If you use your phone for mobile surfing, you should use this program – only then you have a clean and precise overview over your expenses and which program caused them.

Today I will have a look on Ted Baker’s Six Pack, powered by Proporta. It’s a rechargeable battery with a capacity of 3400mAH (!!) and a USB port to charge your mobile devices – anywhere! First of all, I want to thank Proporta for the review sample – the shipping from the UK to Germany was very fast (ordered on Monday, arrived on Thursday)!

Package Content

The Six Pack comes along with adaptors for Nokia, Sony Ericsson and some Samsung phones as well as an iPod connector, a micro and a mini USB cable and a 4.0 DC cable. These connectors can be plugged into a retractable cable (included in the package). In addition, there is an AC power connector with 4 different exchangeable plugs for worldwide use and a USB cable – both for charging the mobile battery. Last but not least, there is a stylish bag in which you can carry the battery.

How to use

Using the Six Pack is very simple: to charge it, just connect it either to the USB port of your PC or use the AC adaptor. Plug one end of the mini USB cable into the AC Adaptor/USB port and the other end into the rechargeable battery. Make sure you use the smaller connector labeled with “in” at the Six Pack and you’ll be fine. A red LED indicates that the battery is charging. When it’s full, the LED will switch off.

Now you’re on the go and are going to run out of power: don’t panic, you’ve got Ted Baker’s Six Pack! Just pick the retractable cable, the adaptor you need, plug them all together and connect your mobile device to the battery. Now, press the power button on the battery and your mobile device is charging – very easy to use! While charging, a green LED shines.

A few seconds after you’ve disconnected your device from the battery, Ted Baker’s Six Pack recognizes automatically that the device is not plugged any longer and the green LED automatically turns off.

Personal experience

In my summer holidays which I spent in France I had enough time to test the mobile battery pack intensely. During the long ride to the Atlantic Ocean (2 days), I used the car charger to keep my device powered while navigating; it just worked like a charm :) The (USB-) power cable was long enough to reach from the cigarette lighter to the window. I used a bluetooth GPS reciever by TomTom and tried to charge it in the car for this review. Well, not much to say, it just works great!! I tested the battery pack with the following devices: Dell Axim x51v (adaptor required, sold seperately), Sony Playstation Portable, TomTom Wireless GPS MKII, Sony Ericsson K800i, PalmOne Zire 72s. (First photo: the sun was very bright, so sorry for my strange face.. ;-) )

Conclusion

This accessory is a must-have for every owner of a mobile device – there isn’t always a wall socked if you need it, especially if you’re on the go! Very easy to use! Get it at Proporta! :

I recently reviewed the Windows Mobile picture viewer EyePhoto by Vito. Now, the developer released an update to version 1.1. The color of the interface changed slightly to black, and the program now comes with support for a couple more languages, like Japanese, Russian and Spanish.

The new features are a slideshow mode, and the ability to delete a picture, view it’s properties and send it right out of the fullscreen mode! Before sending, it’s possible to resize the image to save upload time and traffic.

People who already own EyePhoto should update to version 1.1, if you have no idea about which program I’m talking have a look on my review or visit the Tamoggemon software store!

SPB Software House, the makers of the famous Spb Pocket Plus, recently released a free screenshot tool, Spb Screenshot. It saves the pictures as BMP or PNG, and it is triggered automatically after a time delay or if a hardware button is pressed.

Personally I prefer this one, because it just works! It can be found at the SPB Club or on freewareppc.com

Platypus is the new side-scrolling shooter game from the developers at Astraware. It’s available for PalmOS and Windows Mobile smartphones and PDAs.

This game is not like other side-scrolling shoot-’em-ups: it’s based on the Platypus game for PC and Mac, so the visuals are created with clay, which gives the game its uniqueness. In fact, the game has nice graphics and animations, which makes it even more fun to play. But more on that later.

After starting the game, you are in the main menu. It’s possible to start a new game from there, view the high scores, go to the settings menu, exit the program or continue a game which you’ve paused before.

The Settings menu

The typical settings for a game are located here: switching between landscape for left-handed people and landscape for right-handed people is possible, as well as enabling/disabling auto-fire, adjusting the sound- and music volume and last but not least toggling between stylus and button controls.

The gameplay

You start with an aircraft with one simple weapon which just shoots straight forward. The enemy aircraft are coming from the right, and you have to shoot them – at first, they’re quite easy to defeat, but as the time goes on, it’s getting more difficult to extinguish them without being killed. The number of bullets you need to destroy an enemy is always different, there are easy ones which can be killed with only one bullet, or more difficult ones which need 5 shots to be defeated.

stage selection screen

The aircraft is controlled with the d-pad or with the stylus by touching the screen. If you press the center key, the aircraft starts shooting and won’t stop until you press the key again.

Every action is accentuated with a fitting sound, for example if an enemy aircraft explodes, or just the buzzing sound of a weapon.

one of the more advanced weapons

After a while. there are some obstacles in the game which should be avoided. For example, don’t collide with the power lines – otherwise the aircraft will explode immediately. There are some turret guns which are trying to shoot you – better destroy them ASAP! After defeating some enemys, earn extra points by collecting the fruits.

left: exploding enemy, losing a banana. Collect it to get extra points:
right: see the wires of the power line in the right part of the image?

You start with four lives, but have chances to earn more in the game and at the end of each level. When there are no lives left and you’re killed, the score counter is set to zero, but the game continues where you died.

compatibility

I succesfully tested the game on a VGA Dell x51V, so it will run on VGA and QVGA devices. Screens with a resolution of 240×240 are supported as well. Even when I clocked the device down from 624 MHZ to 208 MHz, the game was quite smooth and playable. Supported WM operating systems are 2003 SE, 5.0, 6 Classic and Professional.

Finally, the game is highly recommended for some gaming sessions while you are in a bus/train etc. It’s fun to play thanks to the nice graphics, so be sure to try it out!

launch screen of EyePhoto

When the program starts up the first time, it suggests updating the photo library. Press the update button on the upper left of the screen and wait until the program found all images. Then, the list of the photos appears on the screen. EyePhoto searches on storage cards and in the internal storage.

When finished, you can start browsing throug your photos!

EyePhoto lists all folders wich contain pictures with a preview image – tap on a folder to see the content, then tap on an image to switch to fullscreen mode. It might take some time to load an image; this depends on its size. After a few seconds in fullscreen mode, the upper menu disappears. The upper menu shows the number of the current image, a button to switch back to the folder view, and a button to rotate the screen 90° CW. To show this menu after it disappeared, just tap once on the screen. When in fullscreen mode, zooming in is possible by tapping twice on the image or by clicking the zoom button in the lower left corner. To jump to the next image, just swipe the finger from the right to the left.

A main feature is the kinetic scrolling function in the folder list. It works very simple and can be controlled easily with your fingers, just swipe your finger from the bottom of the screen to the top to scroll. Have a look at this video to see how it’s working:

EyePhoto demonstration on YouTube

In the settings menu, you can change the language: the program supports English, French and German. There are no other settings available than changing the language.

There is a thing which should be improve IMHO: I’m storing my music with album art on my CF card, so there are ~20 album covers, all in different folders. EyePhoto handles them like every other picture and adds them to it’s library, which makes the list very unclear. It would be better if the user could set exceptions, which folders shouldn’t be scanned for images.

I think EyePhoto is a great addition to the iWindowsMobile collection and it’s main objective, the usability without a stylus, is achieved.

Resco is giving away their football game “Table Soccer” for free! The offer is only available until March 12th, so hurry up to get a free copy here. Have fun! ;-)

I recently ordered some new styli for my Dell Axim x51v, which arrived today. According to the product description, the first one is a 3-in-1 stylus: in addition to the normal stylus functions (tapping on a touch screen – haha) there is a ballpen and a reset pin build in right into the same stylus at the same size.
DSCN1597 Proporta Styli for the Dell Axim X51v Part 1

Ball-point pen
This is quite practical, imagine you have to take a note of something but you can’t use your pocket pc for that (and there are several reasons). The ballpen is located right under the upper black part of the stylus.
DSCN1599 Proporta Styli for the Dell Axim X51v Part 1

Reset pin
Who doesn’t know this situation: you worked or played around with you Pocket PC and suddenly, it won’t respond to any key press. At least then, you remember: Yeah, it’s Windows ;-) But anyway, you need to restart the pocket pc in order to continue working, and that’s where the reset pin is for. At several devices, the reset hole at the back of the device is to small to press your stylus into it. Fortunaly, you got a Proporta 3-in-1 stylus, so just screw out the lower part of it and a small pin appears which should fit fine in every reset hole.

With the proporta Stylus, I got a new feeling if I work with my Pocket PC, it lies very smooth in the hand and the cap seems to be softer than the one of the original stylus. If you consider buying a new one, have a look in Proporta’s shop

Tune in soon for part 2!

I found out about a self diagnostic mode, which checks if some functions of the Axim are working properly. This mode is a little bit hidden, to access it, do the following:

Press Record + Power + Reset at the same time, then release only reset and keep the others pressed. Wait until the Self Diagnostic Screen appears.

Here is a little video at YouTube showing the Self Diagnostic mode. Feel free to leave some comments!

The last part of the review is a video, which shows some of the functions of Opera Mobile. Head over to YouTube and have a look!

(In case the direct link isn’t working, search for “Opera Mobile 8.65 in action!”. My YouTube account name is “sepplmo”)

The first part of Sebastian Sell’s review looked at the Opera Mobile browser in general. Part 2 focuses on tabbed browsing and resource consumption – read on to find out how much memory you will need for comfortable tabbed browsing!

tabbed browsing
Tabbed browsing is one of the main reasons, why you will prefer Opera Mobile. It’s possible to have several pages opened at the same time, to toggle between them just tap onto the title of the tab you want to open.
Screen010 Opera Mobile review Part 2: tabbed browsing and resource consumption
Also, I thought the resource consumption with more tabs opened would be interesting. Read the details in “Opera resource consumption”.

Opera settings
The settings of Opera Mobile can be found under Menu –> Tools –> Settings. In the first tap “General” it is possible to change the home page which should load up every time the browser is started. The “Identify as” option can be set to “Desktop computer” or “Handheld device”. To see the difference, try to visit “www.pdassi.de” in “Handheld device” mode first, then in “Desktop computer” mode. In the first case, the version which is optimized for mobile devices will be displayed, in the second you get the default, for desktop computer optimized page.

Opera comes with a build-in pop-up blocker, which can be either enabled or disabled in the settings. To clear the browsing history, cookies or cache, just navigate to the “History”-tab in the settings and hit the desired button. The cache size can be set here too, by default, it’s 8000 KB. The security protocols (SSL2, SSL3, TLS1) can be disabled in the “Security”-tab, they are by default enabled (recommended).

In the misc. settings tab, JavaScript, Plug-Ins, animations and cookies can be disabled. If Opera should be your default browser for opening web pages, just check the “Set Opera as default browser” checkbox if it isn’t already. Grab and scroll can either be enabled here or on any page, through the context menu (long tap onto the web site).

Opera resource consumption
I measured the RAM consumption with DinarSofts MemMaid:

program memory consumption in kb notes
Pocket Internet Explorer 321.76 kb one page opened (default PIE start page)
Opera Mobile 8.65 135.90 kb one page opened (default Opera start page)
Opera Mobile 8.65 2×287.85 kb = 575.70 kb two tabs opened (default Opera start page and Google)
program time to load www.pocketland.de internet connection type
Pocket Internet Explorer 15.33 sec. ActiveSync
Opera Mobile 8.65 12.42 sec. ActiveSync
Pocket Internet Explorer 09.57 sec. Wireless LAN, signal quality: best
Opera Mobile 8.65 10.50 sec. Wireless LAN, signal quality: best

note: this test was done with DSL 2000 KBit/s and the following settings: PIE: One Column, Text Size = Medium, High Resolution *not* enabled; Opera: Desktop Mode, High Resolution enabled, Zoom = 90%

Startup time Opera: 15.87 sec.
Startup time PIE: 04.75 sec.

Security
Opera supports the security protocols SSL 2, SSL 3 and TLS 1. I had no problems with any web site which requires SSL like Google Mail, or Avant Go. Unfortunately, the Opera Password Manager “WAND” is not included in the mobile version of Opera. Maybe they will add this feature in upcoming versions.

pros and cons
+ good CSS support
+ Flash Player compatible
+ “grab and scroll” feature
+ tabbed browsing
+ PIE Favorite Importer
+ full screen mode
- sometimes slow page rendering
