The GUI system used on Windows Phone 7 has gone by the name Metro for ages. However, recently, rumors have sprung up that the name may soon take the train out.

from CNet now brings the following scoop:

A spokesperson is now saying the reason for this Metro de-emphasis is not related to any litigation.

“We have used Metro style as a code name during the product development cycle across many of our product lines. As we get closer to launch and transition from industry dialog to a broad consumer dialog we will use our commercial names.”

If you ask me, this is likely due to underwhelming performance of products bearing the name. Windows Phone 7 has tanked, and the initial reviews of Windows 8 in German IT media are more than lackluster…
