Don’t ask me what is going on here – after stating that then HD2 tinting issue is a hardware issue, the boys have now rowed back.
Members of the xda-developers forum were given the following statement:
Dear HTC Customers,
We have identified a software issue affecting HTC HD2 cameras.
We take this matter very seriously and already have a patch in a form of a hotfix in development.
This will be released as soon as possible.Updates for this product will be released via our support pages, and in the case of Network Devices you will normally still be able to apply hotfixes to the device.

If we are looking at some kind of optical defect, it should be fixable in software. Of course, the quality of the resulting images is likely to be lower than the one which can be achieved with better optics.
