Long-term Windows Mobile folks fondly remember the age of Dell’s AXIM devices – they were the first which made Windows Mobile truly affordable. In fact, many Axims are still in use both at businesses and in the hands of individuals…which can only be seen as a testament to build quality.
Unfortunately, Dell stopped producing new devices after the now-legendary Axim x51v…and while rumors of a smartphone release have percolated the market for some time, they have not come to fruitition.
A recent report from Barrons.com claims that this is not Dell’s fault – instead, carriers have been uninterested as the devices were said to “lack differentiation”.
This can obviously mean a lot of things…but I am still pretty sure that the core eeker was pricing and market experience. Insider contacts at a major Austrian carrier have frequently told me that carriers are extremely hesitant to accept new partners (even if they are 25% cheaper) for fear of network outages => why go Dell if HTC is a proven partner and is not much more expensive…
