The folks at Microsoft’s have apparently taken a page out of Palm’s book, as the currently Orange boys have changed their corporate identity and name multiple times in the last three years. Microsoft’s Windows Mobile has also been renamed quite a bit (thereby causing endless confusion) – the latest attempt currently is a rumor and hits us via DigiTimes:
Microsoft, which is planning to unveil its Windows Mobile 6.5 platform at the Mobile World Congress soon, has decided that, going forward, Windows Mobile-based handsets will be promoted simply as Windows phones without specifying an OS version number, according to market sources in Taiwan.
To be perfectly honest, I am not too sure if this really will happen. The reason for this is short and sweet: Microsoft loves fancy names for its operating systems. We currently have Windows Mobile Standard for touchscreen-less devices, Windows Mobile Classic and Professional for touchscreen devices with and without phones (as if anyone cared).
Uniting touchscreened and touchscreenless devices would be stupid – but would be necessary under the new name Windows phone. Nevertheless, the MWC is in a few days…which means that we will know more soon!
