So far, Acer has not been too big a player in the handheld computing space: they had a few cheap PocketPC’s which sold well about 2 years ago, but that was that excerpt for their Ferrari GPS devices. And let’s not forget their rotten customer care…

Anyways: when Asus announced plans to flood the market with its crap, Acer had to step in. Fighting fire with fire may not be too nice, but sometimes is the only thing possible according to DigiTimes:

Wang believes that the smartphone segment will me a major growth driver for the company over the next 3-5 years. Acer plans to increase staff in its smartphone division to 500 employees including 200 transfered from E-Ten’s R&D division. According to company sources, moving forward Acer will take over the reins of smartphone development, while E-Ten will focus on real-time stock tracking devices, the market segment in which E-Ten built its first success back in the late 1990s.

The TamsPPC team wishes them well – we hope to see them driving down PocketPC prices even further!
