PlanOn’s recently-announced PrintStik printer promises to come close to the compactness of needle and matrix-based portable printers used in the past. Even though it is based on thermal paper rather than usual one, the device is impressive.
As beta drivers have recently been made available for the box, I decided to take it for a spin with my ipaq rx4240. The image below shows how small the printer really is – it’s close to the Zen of portable printing:

Unfortunately, the beta drivers were not able to localize the printer even though it was turned on:

Updating the drivers via the driver’s own update tool (!!!) didn’t help me either:

Disturbingly, the ipaq’s bluetooth tool was capable to detect the device. Actually it even found two services hosted on it:

Connecting to the serial port service worked flawlessly – unfortunately, the OBEX protocol timed out after a few seconds:

In the end, the PlanOn PrintStik unfortunately doesn’t work with my PocketPC ATM. As the drivers are still in beta stage, this does not mean that the device will never work – given the popularity of TamsPPC, I am pretty sure that the issue will be fixed sooner rather than later.
