So far, the boys at Meizu’s have produced little except raided booths and loads of hot air. However, Meizu’s CEO J. Wong has just leaked out a video showing the phone’s UI in action…the most noteworthy scene is below:
The blurry frame above shows Sir Wong zooming into an image with a MultiTouch gesture – he clearly touches the device’s display with two fingers at the same time.
As of now, nobody really knows what this means. HTC’s Touch Diamond supports multitouch too, but developers have not received a way to use it in their applications. Microsoft itself is dead silent on the topic, too.
Apple is said to have a plethora of patents covering MultiTouch displays: device manufacturers could thus be afraid of releasing their API’s to the public to avoid possible lawsuits from the traditionally litigation-happy Cupertinians (Austrian tech journalists sometimes call Apple a legal firm with a few software developers).
I personally hope that Microsoft, Meizu or HTC step up and define a common multi-touch API that all manufacturers can agree on. While this will definitely be met with some resistance in the beginning (manufacturers love proprietary technology as it binds customers to their brand), strong developer and analyst lobbying could help avoid a situation similar to the one faced by Palm OS developers wishing to use the hard keys in their applications.
