Apple advertises third-party apps in Point of Sales demo

So far, developers of mobile devices have not felt the need to especially advertise the third-party extendability of their products in their Point-of-Sales demos. However, Apple’s iPhone 3G demo explicitly features third-party apps in Austria - read on for a few images and a Tam-Hanna-made translation:

“Web applications directly on your Phone”
(this now shows a few applications in the iTunes app store. Note that all of them are free)
(Now, Super Monkey Ball is selected)
(The icon now shows up in the launcher’s screen. Amusingly, the payment process and the application’s price have not been shown)
(The game starts up and the screen begins to tilt)
(The device is shown toppling around as the game runs)

AFAIK, this is the first time ever that a mobile phone manufacturer explicitly advertises the expandability and third-party application availability of its platform. Palm once planned something similar, but never aired the TV spots…looks like another first for Apple!

Samsung i770 will drop at Verizon’s soon

Samsung seems to be dead-serious about getting itgs QWERTY-based Windows Mobile smartphones into as many people’s hands as possible (they even run ads in Austria).

Engadget Mobile reports that a CDMA version similar to the i780 will hit Verizon in Q3 of this year (aka real soon) - the image below is all they have to offer:

As of now, no further information is available - stay tuned for updates!

XPERIA X1 - IFA presentation botched

According to Engadget, the XPERIA X1’s performance at the German IFA tradeshow was nothing short of humiliating:

To blame is the software, specifically Windows Mobile 6.1 (or perhaps SE’s implementation of it), which appeared to be actively destroying the display units Sony has on display at IFA — of the three devices, one had some green status lights, one didn’t work at all, and one turned on briefly, only to crash hard and never return again… a pretty poor showing for day one of the show

The poor performance of the device has led to speculation of further delays - the rumor mill keepers currently claim that the device will drop December 2008 the earliest.

As of now, nobody seems to know anything useful about the X1: reviewers have already had prototypes that worked well…

AdMob on browser market share

Providing ads to mobile web sites gives you loads of data about mobile web browsers. Intelligent companies like AdMob make parts of this data available to the press to gain free PR (here you go) by helping the press do its job.

Anyways, this month’s “Mobile Metrics Report” was especially interesting, as it looked at worldwide browser market shares for mobile web browsers. The chart below is from the report linked above:

Classic smartphone web browsers surprisingly make up a minuscule of requests: Palm’s Blazer and Apple’s mobile Safari (which is a much better browser) both have 2% market share, Microsoft’s Pocket Internet Explorer and RIM’s browser both don’t exceed the 4% mark.

Nokia’s browsers (S40 and S60) and OpenWave (a classic dumbphone browser) both have about 30% of the market each, with Access’s Netfront (deployed on smartphones and embedded) coming in as a distant third with 12%. Amusingly, Sony’s CLIE handhelds make up for 4% of these 12%, which gives them a total market share of about 0.5%.

The real lesson which can be learned here is that smartphones and their users are an almost-ignorable minority when it comes to mobile web usage. We may be the most vocal bunch, but our numbers diminish compared to the millions of “dumbphone” users populating the mobile internet (and likely having a data contract). As each and every phone that has a web browser also is Java capable nowadays, the implications that this has on the size of the J2ME market are obvious: it is huge.

What do you think?

A big thank-you goes out to AdMob for providing the data!

Photoshop Mobile coming to Windows Mobile devices

The two screenshots below are the first signs of an upcoming release of Adobe’s Photoshop mobile:

Before anybody goes bonkers: this is NOT a photo editor, but rather a basic photo viewer/photo uploader that uses the Photoshop name for publicity reasons.

The program will initially support Palms Treo 7xx devices and a few touchscreenless Windows Mobile smartphones and is said to drop “as a free download in September”…

P.S. The boys at WmPowerUser’s have posted a very interesting piece of speculation looking at Flash Lite 3 in conjunction to this announcement. People interested in FL3 should definitely give them a click!

Samsung i780 ad spotted on Austrian roads

The global launch of Samsung’s keyboarded smartphone (the i780) has been announced in February. Back then, the company stated that it plans to sell the device OTC (aka unlocked) all over Europe…and we didn’t hear much from the box ever since.

However, Samsung apparently is dead serious about selling this box: I spotted the ad pictured below a few minutes ago:

Should anyone feel like visiting it: the ad is part of a campaign covering all tram stations at the Vienniese Schwedenplatz station.

Seeing Samsung launch an ad campaign that actually reaches Austrian roads (a country where smartphones have never been too popular) speaks a clear language: the boys believe in their product and want to sell it like hotcakes…

Palm Touch Pro might go CDMA

The launch of the Palm Treo Pro has been covered on TamsPPC to quite some extent, and we are currently waiting for a sample of the device.

So far, the Treo Pro is GSM only. However, this will soon change according to Cens.com’s Steve Chuang:

…Furthermore, Palm is planning to launch CDMA (code division multiple access) version of Treo Pro series phone in the future for CDMA telecom service providers, like Verizon, Wireless and Sprint. The phone will also be supplied by HTC. …

As of now, nobody knows when (and if) the box will drop - stay tuned for further info as we get it!

XPERIA X1 - the next review

Currently, nobody knows if the XPERIA X1’s case will be silver or black. The review at SM@PE’s can’t clarify this issue (they have photos of silver and black devices), but makes for excellent reading nevertheless.

First of all: the keyboard and hard keys really seem to suck. The reviewer’s opinion is similar to the Boy Genius’s: the buttons feel loose, lack a pressure point and generally can’t fight the Touch Pro’s (which IMHO isn’t that great, either).

The XPERIA X1’s “panel” software seems to satisfy the editor - it’s concept is similar to Dynamo’s, but goes a lot further. Gadgets can be added to increase the functionality, and thumbnails are constantly updated.

Why the Windows Mobile 10 “mock-up” is humbug

Advertising agencies and film directors are known for their - um - creative interpretations of all things computer. We have seen computers that fly, computers that accept prayers (Bruce Allmighty), computers that foo, computers that bar: you get the idea. Unfortunately, this hasn’t occurred to BrightHand’s usually excellent Ed Hardy.

He watched the first issue of The Gemini Division, and saw a device that somewhat resembled a Windows Mobile device as it had the WM logo on it. Ed thus felt like posting about it - unfortunately, I don’t think that this will ever hit the market in this form.

The reason for this is simple if you look at the image thoroughly. First of all, the screen aspect ratio is weird. OK - the AlphaSmart Dana had a very wide screen, too: but it failed miserably outside of its target niche:

The next idiocy can be seen on the right-hand side of the image: three QVGA-aspected screens showing various Windows Mobile 6 apps (some even with toolbars). I mean - how stupid can one be…force applications to run in less than one sixth of the huge screen. Come on!

Furthermore: why are the apps shown with a white background while the rest of the screen has a black BG?

In the end: Ed, please put the kool-aid down. I fully agree that the Windows Mobile user interface needs an overhaul: but this definitely isn’t it and wont ever be it either. It may look excellent on a TV screen…but will definitely not survive in the real-world.

P.S. Don’t bother with the web site of the show - the live stream seems to be limited to the UK/USA…

Smartphone&PocketPC - last issue hits the press soon

As I also work for print magazines, I never like to hear about magazines being discontinued. However, discontinuation is the fate that awaits the Smartphone&PocketPC magazine.

The reason for the discontinuation is not lack of interest, but rather issues reaching customers according to an official press release:

Thaddeus Computing sees a strong future for Windows Mobile. Microsoft sold almost 20 million Windows Mobile phones in its last fiscal year. There are some very cool new devices coming out. In addition Microsoft has committed to make future versions of its operating system much more fun and user friendly. The decision to switch to the iPhone O.S., was a business decision, based mostly on the difficulty of cost-effectively informing new Windows Mobile users about the magazine. Thaddeus Computing estimated that less that 1% of new Windows Mobile users even heard of the magazine.

Smartphone&PocketPC magazine will be replaced by a new publication called iPhone Life, which will be sent out to all current subscribers. Alternatively, a “knowledge bundle” is given away to subscribers.

InsaniQuarium deluxe - the review

Use the discount code SEASOFTAM to get 20% off the list price of InsaniQuarium Deluxe for Palm OS, PocketPC or WMS in the TamsShop!

The images in this review were made on a Palm OS device as InsaniQuarium Deluxe was incompatible with our screenshot solution!

AstraWare’s initial InsaniQuarium turned out to become a smash hit and a true evergreen. The company thus released an update called InsaniQuarium Deluxe - is aquarium management still as much fun as it was back in 2002?

The game’s core idea involves the management of an aquarium. However, fish drop coins instead of waste…collecting the coins then makes you richer.

Fish must be fed. Feeding a fish for some time makes it grow:

The bigger a fish becomes, the more coins it drops. Earned money can then be invested into food upgrades, laser power or new fish. The three images below show the food getting upgraded:

One new feature found in DeLuxe is an auto-tapper that eventually gets unlocked as you purchase upgrades. It allows you to tap-and-hold instead of having to tap the screen multiple times:

Unfortunately, aliens prey on the inhabitants of your aquarium. The various types of alien have its own strengths and weaknesses…while some can be killed with lasers, others must be overfed:

Due to various additions like carnivores and star catchers, elaborate economies can be constructed. In such aquariums, few fish feed other animals which then generate precious diamonds:

The “hard cap” on population size found in the original InsaniQuarium has been lifted. Instead, the game limits the amount of inhabitants by stuttering graphics and starvation…there is a point where food cannot be dropped fast enough to keep all inhabitants alive:

The final goal of the game is the unlocking of so-called pets. Pets hatch from eggs that must be purchased for ever-rising prices, and can then perform a variety of helpful things:

This review looked at version 1.0 of the game on a ipaq rx4240 - the game always ran in landscape mode and filled the full screen. It needs about 5945KB of memory and can be run from an external memory card. Stability-wise, the game was decent…it didn’t crash, but sometimes had issues with the recognition of on-screen taps. Nevertheless, it remained playable at all times. The start-up time of about 7 seconds was annoying, but bearable…

In the end, InsaniQuarium is an excellent game even with the technical issues found in version 1.0. Even though the deluxe version adds nothing worth noting, it remains a very addicting piece of software. All gamers who don’t own its predecessor are hereas officially encouraged to download the free 30min trial of the game…and should expect to pay the 20$ required for the full version(don’t forget our InsaniQuarium deluxe discount code SEASOFTAM).

XPERIA X1 - black only?

Don’t ask us why - Sony’s XPERIA X1 has been able to get a disproportional amount of TamsPPC head line space ever since it was originally announced and delayed. One thing has always been constant, however - the device was silver (image from our CeBit hands-on):

Amusingly, Sony Ericsson’s global web site now lists the device as black only - the idea of a silver version seems to have been dumped:

Tracy&Matt review the Touch Pro

The boys at PocketNow’s recently reviewed the Touch Pro, and didn’t like it too much. Tracy&Matt’s review follows a few days afterwards - and their impression is more positive.

Mr. Matt concludes that the Touch Pro:

… is by far the best phone I have tested; I think it is a great size, not too big or too small. It has all the functionality and speed that I need day to day.

The price tag? Well, anything worth buying is invariably not cheap, and this is no exception, it is relatively expensive in the PDA world, but it is probably the best on the market at this time.

Is it the Ultimate device? It is very close, I am sure they could get it a little thinner in time, the camera and rear speaker could do with an upgrade, in my opinion, that apart it is very impressive. …
