After HTC published a Windows Mobile 6.1 update for the HTC Kaiser (also known as HTC TyTN II, MDA Vario III and others), some users report several problems in the xda-developers.com forum. Instead of running faster, their devices are even slower and suddenly freeze for about 20 seconds. Furthermore, some applications do not work any longer, there is few internal memory and even some microSD cards stop working correctly.

The German ppc-welt.info forum has similar reports – . While some users are glad to have this update as it solves problems, the majority wants its old version back. There are already manuals how to downgrade to Windows Mobile 6.0 again which does not have these problems.

I wrote a list of problems that occur on one or more devices:

  • very slow writing to SD cards
  • freezing of the unit for 10 – 20 seconds
  • memory decreases (from 61 to 45 MB)
  • sometimes no connection to Wireless LAN
  • applications that do not work: SPB Backup, TCPMP, QuickGPS, Skype, Card Export, Opera Mini 4 (problems), Microsoft Voice Dialing, IGO 8, TomTom, GPS applications in general

Some of these problems only occur on one device, perhaps because of a wrong configuration done by the user. Nevertheless, if your Kaiser works correctly using Windows Mobile 6.0, it would perhaps be better to wait for other feedback before you run the update.

  1. Alex

I had the same issue with 6.1, and even got a reply from skype saying release 22 for Mobile is not supported for this or even 6.0 (though I have it working on 6.0)

Other issue was the camera. This did not work either.

    However, no other problems encountered.

I finally restored 6.0, after being sure that the issue with skype was direct and not an interaction from another install by reinstalling 6.1 and skype right after. Now all is fine.

I have sent some details to HTC and skype with the error reports and advised them both to hurry and fix it.

  2. Alex & Antony,

After updating to Windows Mobile 6.1, I do feel my Kaiser is running better and has more memroy available. Out of the applications listed above, most of them still work perfectly. Only ones that do not work is
    Skype.

I am not sure about Tom Tom, IGO and SpbBackup as I am not using them.

  3. My first impressions of the update were good, there was a considerable increase in performance and also battery life.

I have been having a few problems though, when I’m typing an SMS (or typing anything at all for that matter) it will often miss out letters or freeze for several seconds at a time which does get rather annoying.

Also, a lot of games no longer seem to work, especially the Astraware ones such as Bejeweled2 which I find annoying, they install fine but when I try to run them they get to the end of the loading screen and then just close without any errors or anything.

Apart from these problems, I havent (yet) noticed anything else.

  11. Hi!

I have the same problem with WM6. First I thougt it’s because of my sim card. But after i was removed the Kingston 2GB memory card the freezes and slowdowns are gone.

My HTC Kaiser just self-restarted and / or freezed down in every 20 – 30 minutes. Some times it’s totally slowed down, couple of applications are doesn’t responding.

ActiveSync just started itself and I don’t know why.

Now it’s working – without memory card – 13 hours ago without any freezes, slowdowns or restarts.

HTC doesn’t like the Kingston 2GB memory card?
