Acer has just announced plans to aquire E-Ten, a company known for its Glofiish handhelds(no, it’s NOT i-mate). While the fall of Handspring was more-less the beginning of the end for the PalmOS market, I feel different in this situation. In order to understand why I am so positive, let’s look at the companies involved:
First of all, we have Acer. Loads of cash, selling thousands of devices a day(alongside its famously crappy customer care that fucked me over big time half a year ago). Acer did even build some (quite successful) PocketPC’s of their own for the low-end market…but apparently never managed to follow up with new devices. An insider source inside the company even told me that they currently have not a single device for sale in Austria…whoops!
On the other hand, we have E-Ten. Small shack, but great ideas. Sort of where Handera was back in 2000 with its 330 handheld…great product, but too weak to push it to the masses.
Now, ganging up these two will - according to Murphy - lead to an averaging of competency. E-Ten’s future devices may well be less cool - but they will finally become mass-market goods because Acer has the retail presence to make them that.
IMHO, HP et al definitely should look out for those boys - they could become uncomfortable in the long run(although they will probably loose many customers over time - 4wk repair times are unacceptable).
